Location and actor planning - Task 20

Actors/ Actresses

Protagonist: Charlie Woolf
For the main protagonist we have specifically chosen Charlie because he is confident in front of the camera. Although, his face may not be seen due to the mask, we still feel as though it is important that the actor feels comfortable being films. In addition to this we feel as though because of the mask, body language may need to be exaggerated  to show emotion. This is something Charlie will be able to accomplish to a high standard because of his experience performing in drama plays.

Female character: Beth Davies
For the female character we have chosen Beth Davies. This is because she is comfortable being filmed due to previous experience with modelling for photography students. Although she hasn't had any experience acting, because of the mask she wears and the fact that she isn't the main character we feel as though this may not be as noticeable. As well as being a suitable advocate in terms of her confidence she also provides our video with ethnic diversity which we may be able to link to various media theorists and theories. In addition to this, Charlie and Beth know each other outside of filming meaning that they will give a convincing performance in terms of their relationship.

Performing artist: Sam Grotzke
We chose Sam Grotzke mainly because his look fits the alternative genre of our song. He owns lots of clothing which would be suitable for the performing artists costume and is willing to wear it for the role. In addition to this he already knows the song and likes the band meaning he will be able to lip sync the words and sing them confidently and enthusiastically. Sam like Beth has also modelled fro photography students meaning he will also feel confident in front of the camera. Although he is not friends with the other actors we found this an unimportant aspect because Sam will mostly feature in scenes alone.

Male robber: Sam Grotzke
For the theft scene we have picked Sam to perform as the "villain". This is because he knows the other actors meaning that not only will he give a convincing performance, he will also be comfortable and enjoy performing with the other actors. Also, by using the same actor to perform as the artist and villain we are able to link the performance and narrative halves of the video together. It also creates an enigma code for the narrative based half of the video.

Photography studio

The performance based half of our video will be filmed in the photography studio. This is because we feel that this will make the video appear more professional and will allow us to experiment with a variety of lighting effects. For example we would like to project different images onto our protagonist whilst he is lip syncing to make the performance half as interesting as the narrative based half.

Severn beach amusement park

For the scene in which the protagonist is drunk and gets helped by the female character, we have decided to film at the derelict amusement park. This is because the location is illustrative of the darkness that our character feels. It also provides an interesting backdrop for the scene and because of its emptiness, will be easy to film in without interruptions. Because of the height of the buildings, we may also be able to film some nice high angle shots of the protagonist which we may not have been able to film in another location. This will allow us to demonstrate a variety of shots in a abandoned location.

Barrow Gurney Hospital site

For the scene where the protagonist is spray painting, we have decided to film in Barrow Gurney hospital. This is because the abandoned hotel is covered in graffiti which we think will create an interesting backdrop for this particular scene and reinforce the idea of the protagonist being a rule breaker. Also, even though the location is slightly run down we feel that we will be able to make it appear idyllic due to the nature of the scene which we are shooting here.

Thornbury high street

For one of the final scenes we have decided to film in Thornbury high street and the alleyway which splits off from the high street. We felt that the high street especially with the Christmas lights up would demonstrate the happiness that the characters in the scene felt and show the ordinary day they were having. We felt this would hugely contrast with the alleyway clearly illustrating the drastic shift in mood in the scene implying the danger the characters are in.

Shepton mallet jailhouse

The first prison we looked into was Shepton mallet prison. It had been closed down a few years back and now was available for tours. We first emailed them, however they did not respond to our email. We then decided that this may have worked in our favour as Shepton was too far to travel to film such a small portion of our video.

Gloucester prison

Gloucester prison was a much better choice for our video.  After emailing the prison theyt confirmed that we would be able to visit in a self guided tour where we would have to pay £15 per adult. Because of the prisons location , it is ideal to film in as we are able to keep revisiting for reshoots. However, this is something we have to be cautious because the pricing of visits could get expensive.

Learning comment

From this I have been able to gain a cast of actors and locations to film my video. This will mean that when it comes to filming I already know all the actors I will need to bring and all the locations I will have to. Transport may be an issue in terms of getting to the prison and Barrow Gurney hospital, however we will be able to get a lift or catch the bus.
