Music video research- 1

Learning comment

From this task I have learnt that the style of music video has drastically developed over the years. In some of the first few videos I analysed I discovered that the filming is solely performance based. This may be because music videos were not watched as much as they were heard. However, as I progressed through the music videos I found an increase in performance based shots cross cut with narrative based shots. This is a clear example in the development of technology as YouTube began to expand, the music videos began to gain more views and therefore developed to become more complex. In the 2017 video "Wildfire" the video was entirely narrative based. The narrative was a social experiment which was particularly interesting to watch which I think proves the cross over between the two media platforms (music and film). Music videos now not only exist for the audience to hear the music but also for them to "watch" the music. Therefore the videos have become more complex and interesting as the video may encourage a user to click on the video and become a fan of the artists music. However, there were also examples of concept based videos. An example of this is "Groove is in the heart". This technique may have been used to intrigue a specific target demographic and stand out from all the other music video of its time with its technological advancements.

From this task I have learnt the importance of websites for an artists success. A website can promote an album but also praise fans. It can be used to advertise concerts and gigs and to sell merchandise. It is the homepage for everything a fan need to know about a band. However, the websites I have looked at all seem to be carefully co ordinated with the bands genre and brand identity. One of the key features of the websites I looked at was the use of colour. The colour scheme used was the most obvious hint towards the genre of music all these bands played and therefore has provided me with more knowledge on the appropriate use of colour for a specific genre of music. In addition to this I learnt that the popularity of the band does have an impact on their websites. For example I found that the less popular artists had websites which were more immersive for their fans. This may be because in allowing their fans to contact them they make their fans feel valued where as fans of more popular bands may not need that level of encouragement. This will be something I have to keep in mind when designing my website in relation to my artists popularity.
